What is The Berlin Wall Anniversary Date?

BERLIN WALL ANNIVERSARY
(to view the article, go to: http://blog.eurocinema.tv/2009/11/10/berlin-wall-anniversary.aspx)

This being the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 many are remembering that event and the long history leading up to that day. One of the most harrowing events was depicted in an NBC documentary that can be found on the MSNBC site, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/33623268#33623268

An NBC news crew followed the group of former East Berliners digging a tunnel from west to east to rescue their families and friends. This true event is depicted in the film DER TUNNEL (THE TUNNEL) now playing on Eurocinema on Demand. The movie, which is an inch by inch depiction of the planning and digging of the tunnel. The heroes of the film, besides the technical issues they had to deal with were constantly hounded by “who can we trust” since during this period the notorious East German Stasi (secret police) had recruited many to spy and get information on escape attempts.

The film has a long list of German favorites, Sebastien Koch (LIVES OF OTHERS, BLACK BOOK) Heino Ferch (DOWNFALL) Alexandra Maria Lara (DOWNFALL, THE READER) and Nicolette Krebitz. The trailer for the movie is available: http://www.eurocinema.com/index.php?film_id=103

If you want to learn more about the events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-uniting of not only a country but families, friends and an entire society, then you should watch this movie.

Best answer:

Answer by bla bla
You are right to set the alarm bells ringing as false job offer scams are rife these days

Just type “Omni Royal Hotel” and “scam” into google and you will see the entries pop up!

http://www.fraudwatchers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6016

http://419.bittenus.com/7/5/OmniRoyal-Hotel.htm

http://suckerswanted.blogspot.com/2007/03/omni-royal-hotel-canada.html

and most interesting – the same contact name as yours http://www.antifraudintl.org/showthread.php?t=5656 and reading this, here is the scam part “Applicant will be responsible for the cost of Immigration Clearance Certificate ($ 215) at Canadian Immigration Bureau” (although yours will probably be the German Immigration Bureau”

If you reply yes, they will ask you to send this sum of money to them via Western Union/Moneygram (as there is no recourse with these methods). They will of course state that this is non-refundable. In fact they will probably ask you for more money for other reasons until the point where you refuse……….. and then “Sorry but the visa was refused by the immigration bureau”, and then the “job offer” and your money is gone for good

Any reputable hotel will have an Email account with their own domain name so e.g. it would be xyz@hotel-omni.de and not a freemail account like yahoo which she is using and which anyone can register

So do not answer them, and please do not send any money to them at all. If you have answered then, then take care as you can expect more “offers” coming your way

What Is The History of the Berlin Wall of Germany

For 40 years, the Communist regimes in Eastern Europe appeared unbreakable. The Iron Curtain began to collapse in 1989 and in just one year, countries have rejected communism one after another, like domino pieces.

The symbol of the Cold War, Berlin Wall has been called the “physical image” of the Iron Curtain. For 28 years, the colossal construction divided in two a city – Berlin and a country – Germany. The fall of the Berlin Wall is the most influential mark of the communist bloc downfall.

The creation of the wall began on August 13, 1961 to stop the westward departure of the German people. In the east it was named “the anti-fascist protection wall” while in the west people named it “Wall of Shame”. 155 km of humiliation of over 3 m high, of which 43 km through the center of Berlin.

The boundary was also made of km of trenches, bunkers, hundreds of watch towers and barbed wire. Although the construction of the wall began in 1961, Germany was divided since the end of World War II. In 1945, Reich capital was separated between the Allied powers in the west and the Soviet Union in the east, and in 1949 two countries were born: Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.

In 1952, East Germany closed its frontier with West Germany, concerned about the exodus of population. There were vulnerable points though, where people were still capable to pass. More than 2.5 million Germans made it to west between 1949 and 1961.

Although on June 15, 1961 East German leader Walter Ulbricht declared that there will not be a wall built, on August 13, the eastern part of Berlin is encircled by barricades and barbed wire. The wall is constructed in various stages. In 1962 a barricade was added, 90 feet on the inside, being created a strictly administered “restrained zone”. Houses on this strip were wrecked and people moved. The area, mined and full of trapping wire, offered an ample field of fire for the guards.

In 1965 concrete walls began to appear and, over the years, observation towers were added, while patrols and security were increased.

The “four generations wall”, perfected in 1975 was the last version. It was composed of slabs of 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. The wall was fortified with motion sensors, fencing net and barbed wire, trenches against vehicles, and on the crest wall it was mounted a clean pipe, which would have made even problematic to jump over.

The eight passing points were designed particularly for different sorts of people that could pass through. The most famous was Checkpoint Charlie, which was meant only to Allied personnel and non-German citizens.

During the history of the Wall, military personnel, officials and Allied diplomats could enter East Berlin without passport control. Also, Soviet patrols were allowed to enter freely in the West Berlin.

On November 9, 1989 the East German government decided to permit visits to West Germany, but the minister for propaganda was not accurately informed therefore a lot of agitation was created. Tens of thousands of Berliners assailed the crossing points, claiming to move without restriction in the West. Overwhelmed by tens of thousands of people and in the absence of clear instructions, border guards were not likely to open fire, leaving the crowds to pass over.

The wall has been kept some time after November 9. On June 13, 1990 East German army began formal demolition, and on July 1 all border crossing points were properly abolished. The two Germany halves were finally reunited on October 3, 1990.

Today, there are only three remaining portions of the wall: a section of 80 meters near Postdamer Plaz, a longer section near the river Spree and the third piece, turned into a monument, north of Bernauer Strasse.

My Recommendations For The Most Famous Castles in Germany

Attractions in Germany
by Imparo

Germany is one of those countries which you can only discover if you spend lots of time exploring its landscape, its culture, its cuisine and its people. There are so many things to be done and seen in this great country that you will need moths or maybe even years to cover all the touristic attractions from Germany. However, there are very few people who can afford the luxury of spending more than a week or two in vacation. If you have only a limited time to see Germany you should definitely make some time in your schedule for its castles. Situated in some of the most beautiful areas in Germany and built with so much style and elegance, these castles will leave you breathless the moment you will see them.

Burg Eltz Castle

Burg Eltz Castle is one of Germany’s best preserved castles. Built in the medieval period, the first written attestation of Burg Eltz dates back from 1157 and from then on the only family in whose administration this castle was is the Eltz family. Even nowadays, a third of the castle is not opened to public as it is the residence of the Eltz family. Only two thirds of the castle can be visited, yet they really worth the effort. You will see here wonderful frescoes, old furniture, paintings and art, beautifully decorated rooms in a style that has passed the proof of time.

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Another great and extremely famous castle, even not that old is Schloss Neuschwanstein. This castle’s construction began in 1869, under the reign of King Ludwig II. He wanted an elegant, almost extravagant castle which will fully have its signature on it. It is said that there were no less than 14 carpenters who have worked on the king’s bedroom and it took them about 4 years and a half to complete it. Unfortunately, many rooms were left unfinished when King Ludwig II was removed from the throne. However, what has been done is a work of art that deserves all our admiration and appreciation.

This castle is not only famous for its great tapestry, its works of art or its design, but also for the fact that it has served as model for the famous Disney castle from Disneyland. Thus, if you want to see the original, you should not miss this castle!

Frankenstein Castle

If you loved the famous story of Frankenstein, then you may also want to see where it all began. The Frankenstein castle, situated in Damstedt not far from Frankfurt, this castle served as inspiration for Mary Shelly’s novel. There are all kinds of legends circulating about this castle and it would be quite interesting to hear what things have taken place inside the now ruined castle.

There are plenty other castles which will require your attention while in Germany. Yet, if your time is quite limited, try to see at least these ones. You will definitely return for more whenever you have the chance.

What You Can Learn From the Berlin Wall

In 1961 the East German government built the Berlin wall to stop the flow of people into West Germany. Over time, the wall did more than stop the flow of people. It became a powerful symbol of oppression and stopped the flow of ideas and freedom.

On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell.

This historic change opened the flow of people, and again became an equally powerful symbol of change, creativity and a return to greater freedoms.

Both the building and tearing down of the wall are powerful metaphors for leaders. Many leaders put up walls to “protect” or “isolate” themselves from those they lead. While it may not be as intentional as the Berlin wall, it will likely be as obvious and limiting to those you lead.

Walls You May Have Erected

Have you put up walls through your words or actions that reduce or limit any of the following?

Trust. Are the levels of trust in your organization and on your team where you would like them to be?
Communication. While communication is always a challenge, do you find yourself able to clearly communicate with your team, and do they communicate freely with you?
Openness. Are you comfortable in sharing your concerns genuinely and do people share them with you in return?
Creativity/Ideas. Do you hear great ideas from your team regularly?
Engagement. Are people onboard, enrolled and moving forward towards their goals and the goals of the team?
Attitude. Is the attitude of the organization healthy and where you would like it to be?

Your answers to these questions hopefully will be quite instructive.

If you find gaps when answering them, recognize that you as a leader play a role in each of them. If any fall short of where you would like them to be (or where the organization needs them to be for maximum success), get some feedback from others and build a plan to begin tearing down those walls or barriers.

When the Walls Come Tumbling Down

Your walls likely are less obvious than the Berlin wall, and the changes that come with tearing them down may not occur as quickly, but believe me, as you identify your personal walls and begin tearing them down, you will begin to observe new results.

Regardless of the nature of the wall you have built, tearing it down will result in:

Improved working relationships
Greater respect and credibility for you
Better problem solving
Greater organizational and individual productivity
Increased employee retention
Higher morale
Better Customer service
Fewer frustrations
Lower organizational stress
Greater results

When the Berlin wall fell, the world changed. As you identify the walls you have erected and subsequently knock them down, your world will change too – and change for the better.

Answer by chai22
It will vary a great deal, some B&B and guesthouses ‘can’ be more expensive than small hotels, also the standard of the accommodation varies very much ! It will also vary by location, often a place that is not so convenient for transport could be a lot cheaper than a place with a central location, but then you pay more for transport. I think better to also check the location and if transport is near or far.

Last year in Berlin Lindemann Hotel Alte Feuerwache was about 55 Euro, which is quite cheap, and next to the Metro !
In Munich the Hotel Modern – 3 star, very central, about 65 Euro

There are many reviews for B&B and guesthouses and small hotels and maps where the place are.
